Experience Overview

Bamboo Basket Weaving with Saori Hashimoto

– A Cultural Craft Experience in Kanazawa

Immerse yourself in the refined world of Japanese bamboo craftsmanship through this guided workshop led by Saori Hashimoto, a bamboo artist dedicated to preserving one of Ishikawa’s rare traditional arts.

Held in a beautifully restored townhouse near central Kanazawa, the experience offers participants the opportunity to learn bamboo basket weaving—a skill deeply rooted in the region’s tea ceremony culture since the Edo period.

Japanese bamboo craft typically utilizes only the outermost layers of the bamboo, where the fibers are densest and most durable. These layers possess a natural luster and strength ideal for fine craftsmanship, while the softer inner portions are usually removed. Authentic bamboo works are not only elegant but also long-lasting, with the possibility of repair and continued use over generations.

Ms. Hashimoto was inspired by the work of her grandfather, Sensetsu Hashimoto, a respected bamboo craft artist active throughout the Showa and Heisei eras. After a career in publishing, she chose to continue his legacy and now creates original works that blend traditional techniques with contemporary sensibilities.

During the workshop, you will craft your own bamboo basket under her careful guidance. Following the session, enjoy a quiet tea time with the artist, offering a moment of reflection and cultural exchange in the heart of Kanazawa.

Saori Hashimoto – Bamboo Craft Artist

After working in publishing, Saori Hashimoto returned to Kanazawa and opened Takeya, a teahouse built on the site of her grandfather Sensetsu Hashimoto’s bamboo workshop. Inspired by his legacy, she began studying bamboo craft under master artisan Kazunaosai Motoe.

Today, Saori creates original works using traditional techniques—from tea utensils and restoration pieces to designs suited for modern living. She also teaches bamboo craft, sharing her skills and passion to help preserve this rare tradition.
