Tour Overview
―Mt. Iozen: Kanazawa’s Enchanted Forest Where Legends Live On ―
Just outside Kanazawa lies Mt. Iozen, a scenic satoyama designated as a Prefectural Natural Park. Rich in seasonal beauty and folklore, it’s a perfect escape into nature.
Deep in the forest, Lake Onuma holds a centuries-old legend of a giant serpent. Locals revere it as a water god and guardian spirit, adding a mystical aura to the tranquil landscape.
Step into the woods and you’ll feel like you’ve entered a world of spirits—mossy stones, towering trees, and whispering winds create an atmosphere straight out of a Japanese folktale.
🌸Mt. Iozen welcomes all ages, offering gentle trails, vibrant wildlife, and a peaceful retreat through the changing seasons. It’s more than a hike—it’s a journey into Japan’s natural soul.
Nature of Mt. Iozen — A Living Tapestry of Seasons
Mt. Iozen’s unique location—where coastal climate meets alpine terrain—creates a rich mosaic of natural environments. As you ascend, you’ll pass through distinct ecological zones, each with its own character and seasonal beauty:
-
Deciduous forests filled with beech and oak trees, where spring brings carpets of wildflowers like katakuri and iwauchiwa
-
Evergreen groves of cedar and cypress, draped in moss and echoing with birdsong
-
Wetlands and streams, home to frogs, dragonflies, and rare mountain birds
-
Highland meadows, where summer lilies sway in the breeze and autumn grasses shimmer gold beneath expansive skies
Mt. Iozen is also known for its medicinal plants, once gathered by mountain monks for healing rituals.
The Poetic Legacy of Muro Saisei
Mt. Iozen was more than a mountain to Muro Saisei—it was his refuge, his muse, and his “spiritual homeland.” Born in Kanazawa in 1889, Saisei often wrote about the mountain’s quiet beauty and its power to reflect the inner self.
“Iozen is not merely a mountain—it is a mirror of my heart.” — Muro Saisei
During the tour, you’ll hear excerpts from his writings and learn how this landscape shaped his poetic voice. It’s a rare opportunity to experience nature through the lens of Japanese literature.
