【Our precious buddy.】

In order to reduce the amount of garbage as much as possible, we introduced composting last spring. Composting is the process of fermenting and decomposing organic matter such as vegetable scraps, leaves, and paper from households into compost through the action of microorganisms. 
There are many different types of compost, but we chose a type called “kiero. （The name “kiero” comes from the Japanese word for “disappear.”）This is the one I have been trying at home for over a year. When you put “black soil” in a container that is well ventilated and receives good sunlight, the bacteria in it break down the food scraps very hard. The amount itself rarely increases, and you can continue to dispose of food scraps semi-permanently. Using it, the amount of garbage to be collected has been cut in half!

We purchased wooden crates made by a welfare organization, painted them ourselves with preservative paint, and attached non-woven fabric to the inside to prevent the wood from rotting.
This “kiero” is very convenient, and the buried food scraps disappear in about a week!
But that's during the warmer months.... In winter, when the temperature is lower, the microorganisms are less active, so it takes several times longer to decompose.

So we stopped using the compost for a while, but recently the weather has been warmer, so we added food scraps for the first time in a while.

This is the first winter since I started using the compost.
We are looking forward to spring when the microorganisms will become more active!

ゴミの量を少しでも減らす為に、去年の春からコンポストを導入しています。コンポストとは、家庭から出る野菜くずなどの生ごみや葉、紙などの有機物を、微生物の働きにより発酵・分解して堆肥を作ることを言います。 
コンポストには様々な種類がありますが、私たちは「キエーロ」を呼ばれるタイプを選びました。これは私が自宅で１年以上試しているもので、風通しがよく日光が届く容器に「黒土」を入れることで、その中に含まれているバクテリアが生ゴミをせっせと分解してくれます。その量自体も増えることはほとんどなく、半永久的に生ごみを捨て続けることができるとても優れたコンポストです。これを使うと、集荷してもらうゴミの量が半分に減りました！

福祉施設で作られた木枠を購入し、自分達で防腐剤のペンキを塗り、内側には木が腐らないように不織布を貼り付けました。
この「キエーロ」はとても便利で、１週間ほどで埋めた生ごみが消えます！
でも、それは暖かい時期の話…。気温の下がる冬場は微生物の活動が弱くなる為、分解にこれまでの数倍も時間がかかります。

というわけで、しばらく使用をストップしていましたが、最近暖かい日が続いていたので、久しぶりに生ごみを入れてみました。

コンポストを使い始めてから、始めての冬。
微生物が元気になってくれる春が待ち遠しい！

【Field trip to Ohi Museum.】

In order to show IN KANAZAWA HOUSE visitors the charms of Kanazawa more deeply, we decided to visit the Ohi Museum, which we had been curious about.

Here, visitors can take their time to view and fully enjoy the 350-year history of Ohi-ware pottely, from Chozaemon I to the current Chozaemon XI. Along with these works, you can also experience the grand story of Kanazawa's deep tea ceremony culture. It was a very satisfying museum.

Next we moved on to the adjacent Ohi Gallery, where the works were actually for sale. Each of us dreamed of a life with Ohi pottery, and we enjoyed our time there. Then, unexpectedly, we met Chozaemon Ohi 11th generation at the entrance and he greeted us. （What luck!)

In the gallery, you can choose one of the Ohi-yaki tea bowls from each generation and have matcha (green tea) with it. (After a tour at the museum, the luxury of this experience was very much appreciated...) We didn't have time to visit this time, so we decided to definitely visit again next time.

IN KANAZAWA HOUSE を訪れるお客様に、より深く金沢の魅力をご案内できるよう、スタッフが気になっていた美術館のひとつ「大樋美術館」をみんなで訪れてみることにしました。

ここでは、初代・大樋長左衛門から現在の十一代大樋長左衛門までの約350年続く歴代の大樋焼の作品をゆっくり眺め、満喫することができます。そしてそれらと共に金沢の深い茶道文化の壮大なストーリーにも触れることができ、とても満足度の高い美術館でした。

隣接する大樋ギャラリーでは実際に作品が販売されており、「いいな…大樋焼のある生活…」と各々じっくり鑑賞を楽しんでいると、思いがけず、十一代大樋長左衛門さんとエントランスでお会いすることができ、声をかけて下さいました。（なんという幸運！）

ここではなんと、いくつかの大樋焼歴代の茶盌（椀）の中から自分の好きなものを選び、それでお抹茶を頂けるとのことなので（美術館で見学した後は、その贅沢さが尚更心に響く…）、ぜひ今度また訪れようと思ったのでした。

【10 minutes walk in the sun.】

According to the morning weather forecast, it was supposed to be cloudy, but the sun came out around noon and the sky turned completely blue. I couldn't stand the unusually clear weather in Kanazawa in winter, so I went for a walk to Oyama Jinja Shrine, a short 10-minute walk from IN KANAZAWA HOUSE.

Despite its location in the city, Oyama Jinja Shrine offers a sense of fresh air and the richness of nature. During the New Year's holiday, there used to be long lines of people waiting to visit the shrine, but since it is already mid-January, there were very few people there. I was able to enjoy the tranquility of the place.
Since I had come all the way to the shrine, I prayed for IN KANAZAWA HOUSE members' health and good fortune for the year ahead.

But after an hour, the sky quickly turned gray again. The blue sky and the sun were like a gift that suddenly appeared.　
I wonder when we will see them again.

朝の天気予報では曇りのはずでしたが、お昼頃から太陽が顔を出し、すっかり青空に。冬の金沢には珍しい晴天に居ても立っても居られなくなり、IN KANAZAWA HOUSEから徒歩10分ちょっとのところにある、尾山神社へと散歩に行ってきました。

街中にありながらも、空気の清々しさと自然の豊かさを感じられる尾山神社。お正月には参拝する人で長蛇の列となっていましたが、さすがに1月中旬とあって人はまばら。静かな時間が流れていました。

せっかくきたので、IN KANAZAWA HOUSEメンバーの今年1年の健康と幸運をお祈り。

でも１時間も経つと、あっという間に灰色の空に元通り。ふと現れる贈り物のような青空と太陽。次はいつ会えるのでしょうか。

【Snow and Quiet time】

News about the heavy snowfall on the Sea of Japan side has been widely reported in the national editions, but fortunately, only a few centimeters have accumulated in Kanazawa City so far.

However, the wind has been very strong for the past few days, and the snow is falling not from above but from the side. In this case, we can’t even use umbrellas. I hope everyone in Kanazawa is doing well.

This morning IN KANAZAWA HOUSE was quiet and still. But every once in a while, snow falls from the roof with a loud noise, or the glass door at the entrance shakes violently due to strong winds, so there is a thrill in the silence. (My heart pounded each time.)

And the lions placed in such a quiet space seemed more powerful.(The lion that was used in the “Matsuri Night Festival” experience the other day was still there.)

I long for sunny, clear winters, but the quiet winter atmosphere of this old house surrounded by snow is also very pleasant.

日本海側の大雪に関するニュースが全国版で大きく取り扱われていますが、幸い今のところ、金沢市内は数センチ積もった程度で済んでいます。しかしここ数日風が非常に強く、雪が上からではなく、横から降ってきます。こうなると傘もさせません…。金沢にお越しのみなさん、無事お過ごしでしょうか？

今朝のIN KANAZAWA HOUSEは、しんと静まり返っていましたが、時折「ドドドー！」と屋根雪が落ちてきたり、強風で玄関のガラス戸が「ガタン！」と激しく揺れたりと、静寂のなかにスリルがあります。（何度も心臓がバクバクしました。笑）

そしてそんな空間に鎮座する獅子は、さらに迫力を増していました。
（先日「祭り体験」が行われた為、使用した獅子が残されていました。）

晴天の晴れ渡った冬も憧れますが、でも、この雪に囲まれた町家のしんと静まり返った冬ならではの時間の流れ、風情も、とても心地よいです。

【Year-end greetings.】

An important task at the end of the year. We changed the Kakejiku (Japanese hanging scroll ) in the guest room to one for the New Year.

In modern Japanese-style rooms, many people display hanging scrolls as ornamental decorations. Originally, however, the “tokonoma,” or alcove in a Japanese room where hanging scrolls are displayed, was thought to be the place where gods resided. Therefore, it was believed that hanging an auspicious hanging scroll would bring good luck to the house.

It has been a hard year that started with the Noto Peninsula earthquake, but thanks to everyone's support and help, we were able to finish the year peacefully. We would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

We are also very grateful to the many guests from around the world who have experienced our tours and programs.Thank you very much for your participation.

IN KANAZAWA HOUSE will be closed from 12/29 (Sun.) to 1/5 (Sun.) for the New Year holidays, and will be open from 1/6 (Mon.).

年末の大切なお仕事。客間に飾ってあった掛け軸をお正月用のものに変えました。

現代の和室では、掛け軸は観賞用のインテリアとして飾る人も多いと思いますが、元々掛け軸を飾る和室の床の間は、神様の宿る場所と考えられていました。そのため縁起のいい掛け軸を掛けることが、家の運気を上げると考えられていたそうです。

今年は能登半島地震で始まった大変な1年でしたが、お陰様で皆様に支えられ、お力を借りながら、無事１年を終えることが出来ました。皆様に心より感謝申し上げます。
また、世界各地からたくさんのお客様にIN KANAZAWA HOUSEの提供する様々な体験をご利用頂けたことも、大変ありがたく思っております。ご利用頂いた皆様、どうもありがとうございました。

【Wonderful lunch party!】

After the meeting, we invited some of the people who had helped us and had a lunch party.

We asked “Marche Lolo Kanazawa,” a popular French restaurant in Kanazawa, to provide catering, and we had French cuisine at IN KANAZAWA HOUSE.

“Marche Lolo Kanazawa“ is a restaurant in a Japanese house in Teramachi, Kanazawa, that uses local Kanazawa ingredients and focuses on homemade dishes to reproduce the authentic taste of the West of France.

Our kitchen is quickly transformed into a French kitchen.

The dishes were prepared quickly and efficiently, and we were served a perfect course of appetizers, soup, meat, fish, and dessert.

We squealed with delight at each dish, as each dish was full of ideas and wonderfully delicious. We had a very happy time.

Our hearts and bodies were filled with pleasure, and it gave us the energy to do it again next year.

Thank you very much, Marche Lolo Kanazawa, for the wonderful cuisine!

みんなでミーティングをした後に、今年1年お世話になった方もお招きし、ランチパーティーを行いました。
金沢が誇るフレンチの「マルシェ・ロロ金沢」さんにケータリングをお願いし、贅沢にもIN KANAZAWA HOUSEにてフレンチのコースを振舞って頂きました。普段は、寺町にある日本家屋で、完全貸切で営業されている「マルシェ・ロロ金沢」さん。地元金沢の食材を使用し、西フランスの本場を味を再現する為に、自家製にこだわってお料理を提供されています。
見慣れたはずのIN KANAZAWA HOUSEの空間が、フレンチの厨房に早変わり。
手際よくどんどんお料理が仕上げられ、前菜、スープ、肉料理、魚料理、デザートと完璧なコース料理を頂くことができました。
どのお料理も素材の味がしっかりと活きていて、食材の使い方もアイデアが素晴らしく、見た目にも舌にも楽しいお料理たち。どれも素晴らしく美味しくて、みんなで一皿ごとに歓声をあげながら、とても幸せな時間を過ごさせて頂きました。

心身ともに満たされ、また来年邁進する為の原動力となりました。

マルシェ・ロロ金沢さん、素晴らしいお料理を、どうもありがとうございました！

【Meeting and Exercise.】

On this day, a year in review meeting was held with the members of Kohaku, Inc. which operates IN KANAZAWA HOUSE.
Since meetings are usually held by each department, it had been a while since we all gathered together.
Everyone shared their impressions of the year with tears and laughter. We also confirmed our goals for the future.

The house is about 100 years old, so even with the heat on, our bodies get colder and colder as we sit for long hours. So, we decided to do some exercises together during the break.
We imitated a you tube video and moved our bodies for 10 minutes, and were surprised to find that our shivering bodies started to sweat a little!
I thought to myself, “Maybe warming up my body by moving by myself instead of relying on the heating system is also contributing to the ‘sustainability’ that we are all striving for.

この日、IN KANAZAWA HOUSEを運営する株式会社こはくのメンバーで1年の振り返りを行いました。普段はそれぞれの部門ごとに集まることが多いので、みんなで集まるのは久しぶりでした。
途中でミカンもつまみながら、涙あり、笑いありで各自の1年の想いを共有し合い、これから目指すべき姿をみんなで確認しあいました。

さて、ここは約築100年の金澤町家。じっと座っていると、いくら暖房をつけていても、どんどん身体が冷えていきます。居ても立っても居られず、休憩タイムにみんなでエクササイズをすることにしました。you tubeの動画に合わせて、身体を動かすこと10分。ガタガタ震えていた身体が少し汗ばんできたから驚き！暖房に頼ることなく、自ら動いて身体を温めることも、私たちが目指す「持続可能性」に貢献しているのかも、と思った？のでした。
