This unique half-day cultural program takes place at the Kanazawa Future City Creation Center, a beautifully renovated former elementary school. Here, you'll step into the role of a Japanese student and experience the daily rhythm of school life—from a guided tour of the school building and a traditional morning assembly to classroom lessons, a Japanese-style school lunch, and even classroom cleaning.
The highlight of the program is an authentic Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) lesson led by an experienced instructor. You'll learn the fundamentals of Japanese calligraphy, including how to hold a brush and use traditional ink, before creating your own favorite kanji character or writing your name in Japanese. Your completed artwork becomes a unique keepsake to take home.
For lunch, you'll enjoy a traditional "Kyushoku" (Japanese school lunch) similar to those served in local elementary schools. Just as Japanese students do, participants serve lunch to one another before sharing a nutritious and well-balanced meal together. This experience offers a glimpse into Japan's food culture and the important role school lunches play in children's daily lives.
After lunch, you'll take part in another uniquely Japanese tradition—cleaning the classroom together. In Japan, students clean their own classrooms every day, helping them develop a sense of responsibility, respect for shared spaces, and teamwork. Through this simple yet meaningful activity, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the values that are nurtured through Japanese education.

Program Director | Cultural Guide
Yuka Suzumori
Born in Ishikawa Prefecture, Yuka Suzumori developed a passion for international exchange while living in Canada. After returning to Japan, she worked as a tourism concierge at Kanazawa Station, welcoming visitors from around the world before founding Kanazawa Brewery, the city's first craft brewery.
Today, she is dedicated to sharing the unique culture and everyday life of her hometown through immersive cultural experiences that connect people and communities. Guided by the belief that travel should foster meaningful human connections, she develops programs that showcase the richness of local traditions and daily life.
As Program Director, Yuka designed this School Life Experience to help international visitors discover the values at the heart of Japanese education. Rather than simply observing Japanese culture, participants are invited to experience it firsthand through classroom activities, shared meals, and collaborative experiences.
Her hope is that guests leave not only with wonderful memories of Japan but also with a deeper understanding of the kindness, respect, cooperation, and sense of community that characterize Japanese society.
