Tour Overview
Maki-e is a lacquer craft in which gold or silver powder is used to decorate the lacquer.
Kaga maki-e is characterized by its ability to express depth and perspective using only gold, and to make patterns appear three-dimensionally by carefully adjusting the amount of gold powder sprinkled and repeating the polishing process.
Kiyose Ikko, which has been preserving the traditional techniques of Kaga maki-e for generations, has spent many years creating works of art with meticulous attention to detail.
Kintsugi
Kintsugi is a lacquer-work technique in which damaged areas of ceramics are repaired by joining or filling them with lacquer, and then decorated with gold or silver powder, mainly on top of it. By sprinkling gold powder and finishing, the seams become like a new pattern, making the vessel unique and special. The beauty of the piece is one of the most appealing aspects of Kintsugi, as well as the idea of breathing new life into the piece by not pretending that there are no scratches, but rather considering them as part of the history of the piece.
Akihito Kiyose is 3rd generation of Ikko Kiyose
Born in 1969 in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, Akihito Kiyose is the eldest son of Ikko Kiyose II.
He moved to Kanazawa City when he was 5 years old and became interested in Maki-e after witnessing the work of his grandfather, Ikko I.
At the age of 23, he began working in the family maki-e business.
Since then, he has worked on mastering the gorgeous Kaga maki-e and has found a way to work on delicate maki-e as well, and is challenging new Kaga maki-e every day.
In 2006, he was certified as a “Japanese Traditional Craftsman” by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
2012 Awarded by Ishikawa Prefecture as an excellent craftsman of traditional industry.
Kintsugi usually involves multiple processes, such as applying lacquer, gluing, drying, and polishing. Therefore, it takes several weeks to several months to complete the process.
For this experience, we will prepare a piece that has been done by a craftsman right up to the final finishing touches.
You will be able to work on the “applying lacquer” and “gold powder coating” process of the final joint by yourself and take it home as a souvenir.
Working with the tools actually used by the craftsmen will be a valuable experience for you.
