Experience Overview
Private Sword Meditation with a Master
In the historic samurai city of Kanazawa, step into a world of stillness, discipline, and quiet intensity through the art of Iaido—the traditional Japanese discipline of drawing the sword.
This experience offers discerning travelers a rare opportunity to engage with one of Japan’s most refined martial traditions in an intimate, authentic setting. Often described as a form of moving meditation, Iaido teaches the practitioner to unify breath, posture, and awareness into a single, deliberate action. The sword is drawn, the cut is executed, and the blade is returned to its scabbard—all within a moment of complete concentration. In Iaido, the true opponent is not another person, but one’s own hesitation, distraction, and imbalance.
Practicing Iaido offers a glimpse into the mindset that shaped the samurai for centuries. Kanazawa provides an especially meaningful setting. Once the seat of the powerful Maeda clan, the city cultivated a sophisticated samurai culture that continues to influence its architecture, arts, and atmosphere today. Unlike Japan’s more crowded destinations, Kanazawa retains a calm dignity that perfectly complements the contemplative nature of Iaido.
During this private session, guests are introduced to the philosophy and etiquette of the samurai tradition before learning the fundamental movements of Iaido under the guidance of a skilled instructor. Using a practice sword, participants explore posture, breathing, and the precise sequence of drawing and returning the blade.
The experience unfolds slowly and deliberately, allowing full focus on each movement. Even for first-time participants, the practice often becomes unexpectedly meditative—a rare moment of stillness within the rhythm of travel.
During the session, the master also presents a traditional katana, offering insight into its craftsmanship, balance, and cultural significance. Guests gain a deeper understanding of the sword’s history, the philosophy behind its design, and the respect it has commanded throughout the samurai tradition. While participants practice with a safe training sword, this demonstration enriches their appreciation of the katana’s role in Japanese martial culture.
Carefully designed for luxury travelers seeking meaningful cultural encounters rather than staged performances, this experience is conducted in private or small groups to ensure personalized guidance and a serene learning environment.
Held at Yokokan Dojo—the last historic kendo dojo in Kanazawa—this is a rare opportunity to experience the enduring spirit of the samurai in its authentic setting.
Yokokan Dojo is a rare and remarkable place in the historic city of Kanazawa. Known as the last remaining traditional kendo dojo still active in the city, it preserves a living connection to Japan’s martial heritage.
Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood, the dojo has long been a place where generations of practitioners have trained in the disciplines of kendo and iaido. Rather than a modern sports facility, Yokokan retains the atmosphere of a traditional martial arts hall, where practice is guided by respect, discipline, and the enduring spirit of the samurai.
Stepping inside, visitors immediately sense the history embedded in the space. The polished wooden floors, the quiet intensity of the training environment, and the simplicity of the architecture reflect the core values of Japanese martial arts: humility, focus, and a lifelong commitment to refinement.
What makes Yokokan especially significant is its continuity. In a city once shaped by the samurai culture of the powerful Maeda clan, many historical sites remain—but very few places continue to actively practice the martial traditions of that era. Yokokan stands as a rare exception: a dojo where the spirit of classical martial arts is not only preserved, but lived every day.
