Tour Overview
The southern region of Ishikawa Prefecture is home to Kaga Daiko drums, which boast a tradition of more than 400 years that has its roots in farmer's insect sending(*). It was also played as a ritual instrument by the lords of the Kaga domain during the Edo period.
Kaga Daiko can be played in several different ways. The drummers beat the taiko to the accompaniment of the flute as they see fit. Each player is free to choose his/her own style of playing, but there is a basic rhythm, and the recombination of that rhythm is what makes each player unique.
Come learn how to play Wadaiko from Hiroyuki Iwaki, who has his roots in Kaga Daiko and is now pioneering a new style of Wadaiko performance.
(*) It is one of Japanese traditional event to exterminate pests on crops and to pray for a good harvest in the year.
OTO Japanese Drum Sounds Representative : Hiroyuki Iwaki
He was born in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Influenced by his father, the head of the Kaga Taiko Preservation Society, he began playing Wadaiko at the age of 3.
He made his first stage appearance at the age of 13, and has participated in numerous events in and outside of the prefecture.
In 2001, he joined Sukeroku Taiko (Tokyo), Japan's first professional taiko drumming team, which has an established reputation in the entertainment industry, on TV, and in Japan and abroad. 6 years later, he began studying basic drumming techniques and direction as a professional Wadaiko drummer, and experienced playing with various instruments, pursuing the potential of Wadaiko. His style, which combines “Kaga tradition” and “Edo sophistication,” has been attracting much attention and expectation, and has recently been featured in many local magazines and on TV.
