Tour Overview
Kaga-Yuzen is a traditional kimono dyeing art from Kanazawa City and its surrounding regions. It is celebrated as one of Japan’s three major Yuzen styles, instantly recognizable by its use of the enchanting “Five Colors of Kaga” — indigo, ochre, grass green, ancient purple, and deep crimson — which form the foundation of each design. What makes Kaga-Yuzen truly special are the elegant techniques like soft color gradation, gently blurring from the edges inward, and the artistic depiction of “insect-eaten” leaves, which add a touch of realism and delicate beauty to every pattern. The designs reflect the natural beauty of Kanazawa. Rooted in the culture of the feudal lords, Kaga Yuzen carries a serene, samurai-inspired elegance into the present day.
Tsurumi-Shenshoku-Kogei is a Kaga-Yuzen workshop located in the heart of Kanazawa City. Inside, a unique dyeing space features a small “river” running through it — the setting where every step of the Kaga-Yuzen process takes place. The workshop creates kimonos, accessories, and decorative panels that beautifully blend realism with artistic elegance, capturing the essence of Japan’s four seasons in each design.
Kunichika Tsurumi is a Kaga-Yuzen artist and the second-generation successor of Tsurumi-Shenshoku-Kogei. Born in 1969 as the eldest son of renowned Kaga-Yuzen artist Yasutsugu Tsurumi, he began his artistic journey after graduating from university in 1993, first studying Tokyo Yuzen under Sakai Norito, then continuing his training in Kaga Yuzen under his father in 1996. In 2001, his passion for craftsmanship took him to Germany and England, where he studied crafts and painting to expand his creative perspective.
While staying true to traditional techniques, he also seeks to create pieces that suit modern lifestyles, producing Japanese items designed for everyday use. As part of this tour, you’ll visit Tsurumi-Shenshoku-Kogei, where Kunichika Tsurumi himself will walk you through the intricate process of creating Kaga-Yuzen.
Since the workshop is also a private space, this is a special opportunity to engage directly with the artist — ask questions, observe up close, and discover the beauty and depth of Kaga-Yuzen in an intimate, authentic setting. At the end of the experience, you’ll have the special opportunity to wear a beautiful Kaga-Yuzen kimono.
