Meet Kanazawa Geigi over Japanese Tea

Discover Kanazawa’s geigi culture during a private afternoon experience combining traditional performance, personal interaction, Japanese tea and sweets. Known as geisha in many parts of Japan, Kanazawa’s professional female performers are traditionally called geigi. They train in classical dance, shamisen music, singing, traditional games and the refined art of hospitality. During this two-hour private experience, guests can watch a live performance at close range, participate in cultural games, try selected dance or drum movements and speak directly with the geigi.

The program takes place at IN KANAZAWA HOUSE, a restored historic townhouse officially designated as a Kanazawa Machiya. An English-speaking guide explains the traditions and assists with communication throughout the experience.

The program begins with introduction of IN KANAZAWA HOUSE and Kanazawa’s machiya architecture. Your guide will then explain the history of Kanazawa’s three geisha districts and the role geigi continue to play in the city’s cultural life.During the experience, guests may:

Kanazawa’s Living Geigi Culture

Kanazawa is home to three historic teahouse districts: Higashi Chaya, Nishi Chaya and Kazuemachi.

These districts developed as centers of music, dance and hospitality during the Edo period. Their historic streets and wooden buildings remain among Kanazawa’s best-known attractions.

However, geigi culture is not simply part of the city’s architectural history. Professional performers continue to train, perform and pass their artistic knowledge to the next generation.

Live Dance and Shamisen Performance

The geigi present classical dance, music and songs in an intimate private setting. Japanese dance often communicates through small, controlled movements rather than large theatrical gestures. The position of a fan, the direction of the eyes and the movement of the hands can express a season, setting or emotion. The shamisen is a traditional three-stringed instrument used in many forms of Japanese performance. What should we wear?
- Smart casual clothing is suitable. Traditional clothing is not required. Guests should wear socks because shoes are removed inside the machiya.
What is the difference from the dinner experience?
- The afternoon program includes Japanese tea and sweets. The evening experience includes dinner and is designed as a premium evening activity.
