Tour Overview
―Mt. Iozen: Kanazawa’s Enchanted Forest Where Legends Live On ―
Just beyond Kanazawa rises Mt. Iozen, a scenic satoyama designated as a Prefectural Natural Park—a sanctuary where nature, folklore, and poetry intertwine. Rich in seasonal beauty and timeless legend, it offers the perfect retreat into a world apart.
At the heart of the forest lies Lake Onuma, said to be home to a giant serpent revered as a water god and guardian spirit. This centuries-old tale lingers in the mist, lending the lake a mystical aura that enchants all who visit.
As you step beneath the forest canopy, you’ll feel as though you’ve entered the pages of a Japanese folktale—moss-clad stones, towering cedars, and whispering breezes create an atmosphere where the spirit of the mountain seems alive.
🌸Mt. Iozen welcomes all ages with gentle trails, vibrant wildlife, and a living tapestry of landscapes that transform with the seasons. It is more than a hike—it is a journey into the soul of Japan’s natural heritage.
Nature of Mt. Iozen — A Living Tapestry of Seasons
Mt. Iozen’s unique location—where coastal climate meets alpine terrain—creates a remarkable mosaic of ecosystems. As you ascend, the landscape unfolds in distinct layers:
-
Deciduous forests of beech and oak, where spring carpets the ground with katakuri and iwauchiwa wildflowers
-
Evergreen groves of cedar and cypress, their mossy trunks alive with birdsong
-
Wetlands and clear streams, home to frogs, dragonflies, and rare mountain birds
-
Highland meadows, where summer lilies sway in the breeze and autumn grasses shimmer gold under vast skies.
Long ago, mountain monks roamed these slopes in search of medicinal plants, weaving nature into rituals of healing and spirituality.
The Poetic Legacy of Muro Saisei
For Kanazawa-born poet Muro Saisei (1889–1962), Mt. Iozen was more than a mountain—it was a muse, a refuge, and his “spiritual homeland.” He wrote of its quiet power to mirror the human heart:
“Iozen is not merely a mountain—it is a mirror of my heart.” — Muro Saisei
During the tour, you’ll hear excerpts of his writings and discover how the mountain’s landscapes shaped his poetic voice. It’s a rare chance to see nature not only with your eyes but through the lens of Japanese literature.
