Experience Overview

After independently exploring Kanazawa’s historic samurai district, guests visit Creava, a contemporary craft gallery located within the same area. Creava is housed in a carefully renovated traditional townhouse, reimagined as a space where traditional techniques meet modern creativity. Through a gallery visit and an atelier tour, guests experience Kanazawa’s cultural structure as a single narrative—from history to creation to exhibition.

What is creava?
Kanazawa developed as a castle town of the Kaga domain and has nurtured a strong craft tradition since the Edo period. Lacquerware, ceramics, textiles, metalwork, and glass are among the many disciplines that continue to thrive today. At Creava, these traditional techniques are not merely preserved but reinterpreted through contemporary sensibilities and global perspectives. The gallery presents works that engage with the question of how tradition can evolve and remain relevant in the present day. Each exhibition is thoughtfully curated, providing context about the artists, their philosophies, and the techniques behind the works. Adjacent to the gallery is an active atelier where artists create their pieces, allowing visitors to connect the creative process with the finished artworks. This integration of studio and exhibition space deepens the understanding of contemporary Japanese craft.

Accessory Making Experience (Optional)
One of its most beloved activities is the accessory making experience featuring Kutani ware, a traditional Ishikawa ceramic art. Guests choose from original Kutani beads and parts, design their own accessories such as earrings, rings, brooches, and more, and the friendly staff will help assemble them in about 30 minutes. No reservation is required, making it perfect for visitors who want to enjoy a hands-on craft experience during their Kanazawa sightseeing. You can take your unique, handcrafted piece home on the same day. The shop also showcases works by local artists, and the adjacent cafe offers a relaxing space to unwind after your creative session. Whether as a memorable souvenir or a personal keepsake, this experience allows you to connect with traditional Japanese craftsmanship in a casual and fun way. (For details, please ask us)
