Tour Overview
Kutani-Yaki is a ceramic ware made in the southern part of Ishikawa Prefecture.
It is characterized by the beauty of its colorful decorations created by overglaze painting.
One of the characteristics of Kutani-Yaki is “Gosai,” a coloring technique in which five colors of paint (red, yellow, green, purple, and dark blue) are applied in a thick layer.
It is popular for everyday use, but its picturesque and gorgeous patterns are also used as gifts for special occasions, and it is also known as a craft product under the Imperial Household Agency's official warrant.
Kutani Kosen Kiln has been in business for over 150 years and has many ties to the imperial family, including making pottery for the Imperial Family when they visit Ishikawa prefecture.
Kutani Kosen Kiln is one of the few kilns that consistently performs all processes of Kutani-yaki (from molding to overglaze painting) in a single location.
The kiln has received numerous awards both in Japan and abroad, and is known for its high quality craftsmanship backed by solid techniques.
Koichiro Toshioka is the fifth generation head of Kutani Kosen Kiln. As the representative of the kiln, he supervises the potters and painters, and also produces his own pottery. Mr. Toshioka studied ceramics at university and returned to Kanazawa in 2004 to take over the family business. In recent years, he has been challenging new possibilities while maintaining Kutaniyaki as the traditional craft it should be.
In this hands-on experience, Mr. Toshioka himself will show you around his studio, and then you will use a potter's wheel to mold a vessel of your choice.
After the pottery is fired, Kutani Kosen Kiln's artisans will apply overglaze painting to the finished product, which will then be sent to your home. (About six months after the experience).
You can choose your favorite overglaze painting from several designs prepared in advance!
Please enjoy the one and only Kutani-yaki in the world, which is the result of collaboration between you and the artisan.
