Tour Overview

Kutani-Yaki is a beautiful style of ceramic ware crafted in the southern region of Ishikawa Prefecture.

Renowned for its vibrant and colorful overglaze paintings, Kutani-Yaki is especially distinguished by the “Gosai” technique, where five rich colors — red, yellow, green, purple, and dark blue — are layered thickly to create striking designs.

While perfect for everyday use, its elegant and eye-catching patterns also make Kutani-Yaki a cherished gift for special occasions. This exquisite craft is honored with an official warrant from the Imperial Household Agency. With a proud history spanning over 150 years, Kutani Kosen Kiln holds deep connections to the imperial family, having crafted pottery for their visits to Ishikawa Prefecture.

Kutani Kosen Kiln is one of the rare studios that carries out every step of Kutani-yaki production—from molding to overglaze painting—all under one roof. Renowned both in Japan and internationally, the kiln is celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship and mastery of traditional techniques.

Koichiro Toshioka, the fifth-generation head of Kutani Kosen Kiln, leads the team of potters and painters with dedication and passion. Having studied ceramics at university, he returned to Kanazawa in 2004 to carry on the family legacy. While honoring the traditions of Kutani-yaki, Mr. Toshioka also explores new creative possibilities.

During this hands-on experience, Mr. Toshioka will personally guide you through his studio before you get to mold a vessel of your choice on the potter’s wheel. Once fired, the kiln’s skilled artisans will decorate your piece with Kutani’s signature overglaze painting, and the finished work will be shipped directly to your home approximately six months after the experience.

You’ll have the delightful opportunity to choose your favorite overglaze painting design from a selection of beautifully prepared motifs.

Enjoy a one-of-a-kind Kutani-yaki pottery experience, where your creativity merges with the artisan’s skill to create a truly unique masterpiece.
